One Team Day returns to Luther Nov. 16

Luther College’s annual One Team Day returns Thursday, Nov. 16, for its fourth year to raise money to support Norse athletics. Donors can support the specific teams of their choice. Funds raised will provide critical operating support, such as advanced technologies for training and recovery, top-tier equipment and uniforms, and quality travel and training experiences.
On the deck again…Warriors finish runner-up; Decorah’s Roe finishes ninth

Graduating some key members off the squad that had helped the South Winn girls’ cross country team make the deck at state may have deterred some teams; however, it only helped fuel the Lady Warriors in 2023 to yet another runner-up finish in Class 1A. It marks the fourth-straight season South Winn has been in the top-three, winning the title in 2021. The Warriors also sent senior Abe Conway as an individual to compete in Class 1A.
Returning to the state meet for the first time since 2020 as a team, the Decorah girls entered Saturday’s race ranked No. 9 and finished 11th. Along with the girls’, Grant Zilka competed in the boys’ Class 3A race.
North Scott ends Vikings’ run in first round

The Decorah football team was hoping for another stunner with North Scott Friday night, but couldn’t find the answer needed to score, falling in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, 35-7.
All-UIC volleyball honorees announced

Eleven local spikers were named to the Upper Iowa Conference all-league teams, released last week.
Six members of the South Winn squad were recognized, while five Turkey Valley netters were honored.

Three members of the Decorah volleyball team were honored for their work on the hardwood this fall by being named to the all-conference list — all first-time honorees
Junior libero Ellie Rolfs was named to the first team, while Maddy Fromm and McKinley Massman were named to the second team.

Winneshiek County cross country athletes are on a mission.
The area will be represented at the state cross country meet, with two full squads and two individual boys taking the course in Fort Dodge. They will be on a quest to earn a spot on the deck by finishing in the top-10 overall and top-three as a team.
Swimmers end regular season on high note at home

The Decorah girls’ swim and dive team not only celebrated a dual win Thursday night, but its seniors who have dedicated time to the program. The Vikes hosted Algona, winning 117 to 66.
In all, the Vikes claimed gold in eight of the 12 events.
Decorah to face North Scott in first round

Missing out on the playoffs in 2022 made the Decorah football team (6-3 overall) hungry to earn a bid this year, finishing the regular season with a 3-2 district record in a three-way tie for second. The Vikes picked up their third district win Friday at home over Waterloo East 54-22.
Road to Dome ends for Trojans at No. 4 Clarksville

For the second time this season the Turkey Valley football team fell to fourth-ranked Clarksville; however, this time it also ended the Trojans’ season in the first round of the eight-man playoffs.
Falling behind early, TV couldn’t recover in the second half with the Indians rolling to a 68-26 victory. Turkey Valley ends the season 5-4.
East Buchanan tops Warriors 46-3 in opening round

The 2023 playoff bid for the South Winn football team ended in Winthrop Friday night against East Buchanan, 46-3, in the first round of the Class A playoffs.
East Buchanan held South Winn to just 131 total yards with the Buccaneers totaling 395 themselves to take the victory. The Warriors end the season with a 5-4 record.
Beckman closes door on SW

The South Winn volleyball season came to an end in the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal on Wednesday evening, as the Warriors were defeated by No. 11 Beckman Catholic in Dyersville.
The Warriors finish the season 17-13 overall as the UIC runner-up team.
Xavier ends Viking’s season

The Decorah volleyball team knew it would be an uphill battle against the returning state champion Xavier team Thursday in Cedar Rapids and it was right. The Viking finished the season 0-3 against the Saints in the Class 4A regional semifinal. Set scores were 11-25, 15-25 and 5-25.
Regional swim sites announced

The Decorah swim team will compete at the Dubuque Hempstead regional.
The regional diving competition, which will also be held in Dubuque, is Thursday, Nov. 2. The champion from each regional site (a total of six), plus the next highest scoring 24 divers qualify for the state meet.
Bring on Xavier; Vikes spike MC

The season remains alive for the Decorah volleyball team as the Vikings defeated Mason City 3-1 Tuesday at home.
The Vikes (14-17) move on to face No. 3 Xavier (22-6) in the regional semifinal Thursday, Oct. 19, at Xavier at 7 p.m. Mason City ends the year 10-26.
TV playoffs end with Riceville

It wasn’t the way the Turkey Valley volleyball team wanted the season to end, but it did Monday, on the Trojans’ home court, to Riceville in five sets with the Wildcats winning 3-2 in the Class 1A Region 6 opening round.
SW girls win UIC; harriers earn conference

The Class 1A No. 3 South Winn girls’ cross country team has made it four years in a row as the Warriors claimed the Upper Iowa Conference title again Wednesday at Silver Springs Golf Course in Ossian. Turkey Valley did not have enough runners to compete for team titles but did have three harriers earn all-UIC honors for finishing in the top 15.
The UIC meet, originally scheduled for Thursday, was moved up a day to avoid the heavy rains that were forecasted to hit northeast Iowa.
Trojans draw No. 4 Clarksville

The season lives on the for the Turkey Valley football team.
The Trojans (5-3, 4-2) earned an at-large bid to the playoffs Friday night by defeating Riceville (6-2, 4-2) on the road in the regular season finale.
Warriors to travel to East Buchanan

After starting 0-3, the South Winn football team (5-3, 4-2) has turned the 2023 regular season around and finished on a five-game win streak and earned a playoff spot. Thursday night, the Warriors shut down the BCLUW (0-8, 0-5) offense, winning 34-0 as they celebrated Senior Night.
Vikes fall to No. 2 Bobcats

The Decorah football team (5-3, 2-2) knew it faced a tough task Friday night, battling Class 4A No. 2 Western Dubuque (7-1, 4-0) on the road.
The Vikes put up a fight but fell to the Bobcats 28-7.
