Returning to the mats in Elkader Tuesday, the Decorah and South Winn girls’ wrestling teams had promising results. The Vikes fell short of the team title with 163 points, just behind champion West Delaware who tallied 168. The Warriors finished the night with 80 points, good for 10th.
SW grapplers show promise

The South Winn boys wrestling team kicked off the season Tuesday night in a quad against a pair of Class 2A programs and a conference foe, coming away with one dual win. On the mats in Jackson Junction, the Warriors defeated Central Elkader 66-12 and fell to Clear Lake 45-30 and New Hampton/Turkey Valley 52-27.
Close finish for Viking grapplers

Although the final team score wasn’t what any coach would like, Decorah wrestling coach Jordan Thompson should be excited with what he saw Tuesday night as the Vikings opened the season at home.
The Vikes welcomed Independence for the first dual of the year, falling in a close match 39-33.
Decorah girls fall to 0-2

It was a close finish for the Class 4A No. 13 Decorah girls basketball team (0-2, 0-0 NEIC) as the Vikes fell to another ranked team Tuesday in non-conference action. Hosting Class 3A No. 5 Dubuque Wahlert (1-0), the comeback fell a little short for the Vikings, dropping the contest 70-65.

Sixteen Decorah High School and Decorah Middle School Special Olympians competed Oct. 21 at the Northeast Iowa Regional Bowling Event at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.

Three locals named all-state football

Three local football players were honored being named to the Iowa Football Coaches Association/Iowa Print Sports Writers Association all-state teams.
Two members from the Decorah squad and one from Turkey Valley were chosen. Recognized for the Vikes were senior Dakota Johnson and junior William Hahn. Trojan selected was senior Oliver Schmitt.

Vikes, SW back on the mats

The Decorah gym was alive with its first action of the winter sports season Saturday with 16 girls’ wrestling teams participating in the Decorah Fall Tournament.
When the last whistle blew, the Vikings finished second in the team standings with 240 points behind Cedar Falls’ 335. South Winn also compete in the season opener, picking up 63 points to finish ninth.

With 13 years of coaching experience, Head Coach Ethan Adams is back at the helm of the girls’ team for his second season with Tayton Bullerman taking the role of assistant coach.

The Warriors will be looking for a blend between their returning letter winners, some talented juniors, with sophomores aiming for a spot on varsity.
