Four events to compete at state for Vikes

In one of the most competitive districts, the Decorah boys’ swim team managed to qualify four events for the state swim meet Saturday. As a team the Vikings finished fourth with 212 points behind Cedar Falls with 490, Ankeny with 465 and Marshalltown with 282.

Over 400 girls started the 2024 IGHSAU state wrestling tournament, hoping to claim a title, or at least some hardware and Decorah will have two vying for the gold later tonight in the finals.
With 132 points already accumulated, two wrestlers in the finals and three others earning a medal, Decorah all but has the title wrapped up over East Buchanan who has moved into second with 94 points, just ahead of Raccoon River-Northwest with 92.
Day one in the books, Decorah leads with two hunting for titles

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team extended its lead in the evening session in the hunt for the team title pulling ahead with 79 points. Cedar Falls is currently second with 64 with Raccoon River-Northwest third with 60. Last year’s champion, Waverly-Shell Rock sits in sixth with 56.
Decorah leads team race after first session closes

With the opening session of the 2024 IGHSAU girls’ state wrestling tournament wrapped up Decorah has a slim lead in the team standings with 51 points over East Buchanan who has 48. Sitting third is Cedar Falls with 43.
Of the nine Vikings taking the mats this morning and afternoon five are still in vying for the top spot on the podium. Both of South Winn’s athletes are still alive as well with one in the championship bracket and one on the consolation side.
Regional qualifier sends nine Vikes, two Warriors to state

Fans were out in full-force Friday for the girls’ regional wrestling qualifying meets, and the Mason City Fieldhouse was no exception as individuals continued to flow in to the stands all day to watch girls compete in Regions 7 and 8.
Competing in Region 8, the Decorah girls’ wrestling team seemed to dominate the mats much as they have done since the sport became sanctioned with the Vikings winning the team title with 254 points. Mason City was the next best with 205 points while Williamsburg rounded out the top three with 194 points. South Winn also competed in Region 8 and tallied 59 points throughout the day, finishing 14th in the 25-team field.
Back on top of UIC; 4 Warriors crowned champs

A year removed from finishing third, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team is back on top of the Upper Iowa Conference, coming away with the tournament title with 227 points. In second was North Fayette Valley with 209 points followed by MFL MarMac with 191.

The Decorah boys’ swim team is hitting its peak with the postseason underway with the North Central Swim Conference title Saturday in Grinnell. The Vikes racked up 472.5 points to win the title over Boone who tallied 448.
Working on the final touches, Vikings second at NEIC tourney

In the 78th edition of the Northeast Iowa Conference meet Saturday in Waverly, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team came in second with 207.5 points, behind the host Go-Hawks’ 278.5 points.
Decorah had six gapplers advance to the finals with five taking gold.

It was another two wins for the Class 3A No. 5 Decorah boys’ basketball team (14-1, 7-1 NEIC) last week as the Vikes defeated New Hampton and Dubuque Hempstead.

Whatever the Viking coaches said in the locker room at halftime Monday night turned the game around for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (12-1, 6-1 NEIC) who trailed by as many as 10 in the first half in the makeup game with Charles City (5-7, 3-4 NEIC). The tempo set by the Class 3A No. 5 Vikes in the second half was no match for the Comets, as Decorah came away with an 88-57 victory.
