Two remain on track for title for Vikes

Garnering 20 points in the first session of the Class 2A State Wrestling Championships Wednesday morning, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team sits in a tie for 12th with Ballard and has two grapplers still on track to earn a title.
Winneshiek Co. to be well-represented at state meet

The big stage at Wells Fargo Arena will see 12 wrestlers from Winneshiek County vying for a state title.
When all was said and done Saturday, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team had qualified seven for the state meet tying for the most ever to represent the Vikings in Des Moines, while South Winn fans saw five earn state bids.
Next up, the opportunity to wrestle in front of the crowds at the state wrestling tournament, which runs Wednesday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 17, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Four events had fans cheering for the Decorah boys’ swim team in Iowa City over the weekend as members competed in the state swim meet, posting season bests in all the events and improving on seedings.

It was a defensive battle Saturday night in a game where a Warrior team was guaranteed to win as the South Winn girls’ basketball team played its first regional game at Wapsie Valley, but it took overtime. After the two squads finished regulation tied 35-35, South Winn (7-15) rallied to win 47-43.

It wasn’t the end to the season the Trojan fans wanted to see as the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team fell at East Buchanan Thursday night 63-40 in the first round of regional play.

Friday’s 66-52 loss on the road at Class 4A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (21-0, 10-0 NEIC) made it just two in the NEIC for Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-7, 8-2 NEIC) as the Vikes finished second in the league.

A flurry of scoring in the third kept the Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-6, 8-1 NEIC) from getting the win Monday afternoon as the Vikes played Winterset (9-10) on the floor at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Decorah came up a little short 43-38 in the non-conference match-up.

The victory bell was ringing in Decorah Saturday night after the Viking girls’ wrestling team finally caught its breath from a whirlwind end to the weekend — and a team state title.
Due to a state speech contest Saturday, the firetruck ride and bell ringing, along with a celebration rally was held Saturday — a night after the Vikings blew away the competition at the state wrestling tournament at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville.
