Three Warriors and two Trojans from the Upper Iowa Conference were recently listed as members of the All-UIC teams. All five are first-time honorees. While no one was named to the first team, one Warrior was listed on second team with the other four honorable mentions.

Monday’s score was well above the Class 3A No. 1 Vikings’ average of 78.3 points per game as the Decorah boys’ basketball team handled West Delaware with ease in the Class 3A Substate 3 semifinals, 98-41.
Warriors’ comeback halted in OT

Free throws can make or break a game, and the Warriors left at least 10 points off the board from the charity stripe Tuesday night in the Class 1A District 6 final. The South Winn boys basketball team made the short trip to Waukon to battle No. 10 Kee, coming up short 59-56 in overtime.

Two Vikes named All-District bowlers

Decorah’s Jordan Sims and Brock Christensen have been named to the Class 2A East District first and second teams by the IGCA and Iowa High School Bowling Coaches Associations. In addition, head coach Keith Bruening received Coach of the Year honors.

Four wrestlers put Winneshiek County on the map as they climbed the podium Saturday, Feb. 17, at the boys’ state wrestling championships. South Winn’s Collin Holm was the top finisher of the four in third place at 144 pounds in Class 1A. Decorah had three on the Class 2A podiums including Tommy Sexton at 190 pounds in fourth place, Mason Avila at 132 pounds in fifth and Gavin Knutson at 106 pounds in sixth.

Down to the wire, SW wins thriller in double OT

Edgewood-Colesburg nearly took down a higher seed again in the postseason, after defeating Turkey Valley in overtime Monday night. This time, however, it was South Winn (15-8) who was the target in the Class 1A District 6 semifinal and the game ended in double overtime in the Warriors’ favor 65-60.
Landslide win for Viking girls

One would have to go back to 2017 since Charles City won against the Decorah girls’ basketball team (15-7) and Wednesday night’s Class 4A Region 2 game was no exception to the rule as the Vikes defeated the Comets 70-15 at home.

Sexton upsets top-ranked Sampson in quarterfinal

Day two wrapped up with a bang as Decorah’s 190-pound Tommy Sexton squared off with the top-ranked grappler, Brody Sampson of Ballard, coming out with a decision victory.
As a team, Decorah sits in sixth place with 41 points, tied with Roland-Story with four wrestlers living to see another day of action at the 2024 Boys State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Class 1A wrapped up day one at the 2024 Boys State Wrestling Meet Wednesday night with five South Winn wrestlers taking the mats, picking up 16 points in the seven-way tie for 15th place.
