Veteran golfers to lead Trojan girls squad in 2024

There will be an abundance of experience on the courses this season for the Turkey Valley girls’ golf team.
The Trojans feature a squad made up of nine returning letter winners looking to make a mark on the Upper Iowa Conference.

The first game of the season brought Class 3A No. 13th Dubuque Hempstead (2-0) to Decorah (0-1) to face a revamped Decorah girls’ soccer team who graduated eight starters from a year ago, falling 5-0, Thursday at home.
Experience tested; Vikings return 24 letter winners

Experience will be key for the Decorah boys’ track and field team this spring.
With 10 seniors and 24 returning letter winners, the Vikings have athletes with experience scoring points in the big events. However, with 39 younger classmen, there will be a push for varsity spots.

After not qualifying any events a year ago, the Turkey Valley girls’ track and field team is hungry to get back on the Blue Oval.
With six returning letter winners and a handful of talented freshmen, the Trojans will be tested throughout the season.

There is no shortage of numbers for the South Winn girls’ track and field team in 2024 as the Warriors gear up to make a big splash at the state track meet in May.
The Warriors have 26 members out this year and have a chance to take the top spot in the Upper Iowa Conference.
For the 31st year, Kevin Kearney will be leading the squad and will be assisted by Darcy Einck, Ethan Adams and Ed Wadsworth.
Viking girls aiming for 19th NEIC titles in a row

The Decorah girls’ track and field team is hoping for a big year in 2024 with a large number of state participants and conference champions back on the roster.
Coaching the squad along the journey will be co-head coaches Cristy Nimrod and Brad Johansen. The duo will be assisted by Mike Tangen and Jeff Wettach.

Numbers continue to be a challenge for the Turkey Valley boys’ track and field team with 14 members reporting to practice in February. However low the numbers may not be a reflection on the talent Mark Scott has as he enters his 26th season as the squad’s coach.
Vikes shine at Luther Indoor

No team scores were kept as the Decorah girls’ and boys’ track and field teams compete at the Luther Indoor Invite Saturday, but the Viking coaches can call it successful as each team won seven events.
“The Decorah/Luther Indoor is always a great meet for getting every healthy and available athlete involved in multiple events if possible. We had some very good performances and many PR’s (personal records) were established,” said Viking boys’ coach Joel Rollinger.
Warrior girls race to top at UIC indoor

Teams from the Upper Iowa Conference met on the indoor track at Luther College Friday.
The South Winn girls claimed the title with 113 points with Central Elkader in second with 80 and Kee in third with 78.5. Clayton Ridge was fourth with 49, followed by North Fayette Valley with 42.5. Completing the team standings were Turkey Valley (37), West Central (26), Postville (19) and MFL MarMac (11).
In the boys’ team race it was MFL MarMac taking the title with 102 points, followed by North Fayette Valley with 91.5 points. South Winn finished the night with 87 points in third, followed by Central Elkader with 54. Rounding out the team scores were Turkey Valley (39), Kee (34), Postville (16), West Central (16) and Clayton Ridge (14.5).
Senior core of leaders to lead Warriors in 2024 season

While the South Winn boys’ track and field team may not have the depth it has had in the past, it does have a core group of seniors who have been part of the program since freshmen year. Combine them with those leaders who are multi-sport athletes and the Warriors are certain to score points in numerous events this season.

Bowling teams among top in state

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams proved to fans at the state bowling tournament why they deserved to be competing in Class 2A Wednesday afternoon. The Viking boys finished third overall, while the girls came away with a fifth-place finish.
