It’s a wrap for TV speedsters at Drake

Although no points were scored for either of the Turkey Valley track teams, both the boys and girls were represented last weekend at Drake Stadium.

The South Winn track and field teams were well represented on the track at Drake Stadium late last week with 11 events. While no points may have been scored, the fans were treated to some spectacular performances.
SW girls golf teams bows out of postseason in regional final

While the South Winn girls golf team may not have finished the season at state, the Warriors had a great day on the course Wednesday, completing the day with a season low score of 425.
“All the girls played solid golf. Playing our best golf of the year was a great way to end our very successful season,” said Coach Glenna Munuswamy.
Trojan girls golf wraps up 2024

The Turkey Valley girls’ golf team concluded their 2024 season with an appearance at the Class 1A Regional Final at Nashua on Wednesday, May 15.
The Lady Trojans finished seventh with a 454.Perennial powerhouse Beckman Catholic finished as the team champion with a 386 followed closely by Nashua-Plainfield with a 388.
WD ends Viking girls’ season

The season came to a conclusion Friday for the Decorah girls’ soccer team as the Vikings fell to Western Dubuque 4-0 on the road.
Decorah ends the season 3-11. Western Dubuque moved on and will face Waverly-Shell Rock (12-1) in the regional semifinal Tuesday, May 21. The Bobcats scored twice in each have for the win.
Vikings’ Riveros advances to state golf meet

For the first time since 2012, the Decorah girls’ golf team will be represented at the Class 3A state golf tournament as Maria Riveros tied for third Wednesday at the Class 3A Region 5 meet at Pin Oak Links in Manchester.
As a team, the Vikings finished eighth with a tally of 409 in a tight race in the middle of the 12-team field. Wahlert Catholic (341) and West Delaware (359) took the top two spots to qualify as squads. The top six individual also advance to the state meet.
Viking netters earn state berth

For the second year in a row, the Decorah boys’ tennis team will be at the team state tournament Thursday and Friday, May 30-31, in Iowa City as part of the final eight teams standing in Class 1A.
Hosting Aplington-Parkersburg Wednesday in the Class 1A Substate 3 final, the Vikings prevailed 5-1 over the Falcons. When a team reaches five wins the rest of the matches are pulled off the courts and the meet is considered over.
First trip back to state since 2016 for Warrior boys

For just the third time in school history, the South Winn boys golf team is headed to state.
The Warriors punched their ticket to the Class 1A tournament after winning the district meet Tuesday at Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City.

The Turkey Valley boys golf team saw their successful 2024 season come to an end with their second straight appearance at the Class 1A District Golf Meet held Tuesday, May 14, at Mason City.
The Trojans placed sixth in the 11-team field with a 348 total. Fellow UIC member South Winn claimed the team title with a 325 score. Lake Mills placed second, also with a 325.

11 Warrior events to compete at Drake

There will be 11 events on the track at Drake Stadium this week for the South Winn girls’ and boys’ track teams.
The boys qualified four events at the state qualifying meet Thursday at St. Ansgar. Overall, South Winn was sixth in team standings with 64.5 points.
The girls will have seven entries to state. They were fourth, scoring 75 points.

There will be no shortage of Viking Blue and Red at the 2024 state track and field championships later this week after a combined 29 events qualified Thursday at the Class 3A state-qualifying meet in Clear Lake. In addition to the large contingent of athletes heading to Drake Stadium, the Vikings swept both divisions for the team titles. The boys topped the field with 179 points, while the girls claimed the title with 163.
“Our guys really were fearless and locked into the task at hand on Thursday night. What a night! The coaching staff is unbelievably proud of the efforts during both the NEIC championship and the district championship. It has really been special to celebrate with the girls team as well,” said Viking boys’ coach Joel Rollinger.

Competing in the Class 1A state-qualifying meet in Saint Ansgar, the Turkey Valley track and field teams each finished with 12 points in 12th place.
Time to shine
For the boys, Hugo Busta, Burke Busta, Russell Nieman and JD Kruse will represent the Trojans in the 4×800 relay. In spite of finishing fifth, the quartet’s time of 8:42.96 is the 22nd best in Class 1A for Thursday’s race.
Viking girls advance to regional finals

On the court for the second time in less than a week Friday, the Decorah girls’ tennis team hosted the first two rounds of the Class 1A Region 4 team matches at Luther College.
In regional play, all matches stop once a team has earned five points.
The Vikings advance to the regional final against Dike-New Hartford and will host the Wolverines Tuesday, May 14, at 9 a.m. for the chance to compete at the state tournament.
Viking trio off to state tennis tourney

In Wednesday’s Class 1A boys’ singles and doubles districts competition hosted by Decorah, the Vikes managed to send an individual and a doubles team to state.
The competition is aligned where eight teams enter two singles players and two doubles teams with the champion and runner-up from each getting an invite to the State Championships. The Class 1A state individual and doubles state tournament will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21-22, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
Netters’ season continues

It was a good start Saturday as the Decorah boys’ tennis team is looking to make a return trip to the team state meet in 2024. The Vikes hosted Oelwein, Osage and Clear Lake for the first two rounds of the Class 1A Substate 3 bracket.
In team competition, four teams square off in the first two rounds with the winners playing each other to move into substate finals, which is the final 16 teams. Now Decorah will host Aplington-Parkersburg for the state bid Wednesday, May 15, at 4 p.m.
Warriors, Trojan boys advance to district golf

Across the board there was a lot of good golf played at Silver Spring Golf Course in Ossian Wednesday, with all seven teams scoring under 400 at the Class 1A Sectional 8 boys’ tournament. It was a beautiful day overall and the area schools took advantage of finally having the weather cooperate with some excellent scores.

Monday was filled with great weather, an abundance of competition and a fine finish for the boys of the Northeast Iowa Conference as Decorah hosted the annual boys conference golf tournament at Oneota Golf & Country Club.
The Vikings completed the day in second place with a 337, behind Waverly-Shell Rock who tallied a 315.
Riveros second at NEIC meet

Continuing to improve in the game of golf, the Decorah girls golf team competed in the Northeast Iowa Conference girls tournament Monday, hosted by New Hampton. When the last card was turned in, the hosting Chickasaws won the meet with 352 over Waverly-Shell Rock at 357. The Vikings tallied a 414 to finish fifth.
