After Tuesday’s snowstorm cancelled the dual, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team traveled to Crestwood Thursday to compete, coming aways with two wins by senior Kaydn Meyer and sophomore Maddy Jansen.
“First off, we appreciate Cresco allowing us to step in and dual with them at the last minute. We had a meet scheduled with them earlier in the week, so it was good to get a chance to compete with such a crazy weather week. The girls lost around six matches to cancellations. We were able to get two of our wrestlers two JV matches each and wrestled five varsity matches. We’re still growing, so winning duals right now isn’t our main focus,” said Coach Ethan Adams. “We wrestled hard in all positions and I saw growth on the mat. We can continue to build from some confidence gained last night and improve our intensity in the practice room to simulate competition in the wild weather season.”
The main match of the night was between Crestwood’s ninth-ranked 120-pound Chyann Bullerman-Yu and South Winn’s ninth-ranked Kaydn Meyer who is ranked ninth at 125 pounds. Meyer came away with a 10-0 major decision for the Warriors. At 135 pounds, Jansen threw her Cadet opponent, Cameron Theile in 1:56.
“Kaydn took a big step forward with her process into the post-season, winning that match 10-0. Kudos to Cresco for bumping up to create a competitive upper level match,” concluded Coach Adams.
South Winn will be back on the mats at Decorah Thursday, Jan. 18, in a double dual at Decorah with Charles City at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, the Warriors will be at a tournament in Mason City starting at 10 a.m.
