In what has become an annual tradition, the Decorah, South Winn and Ottumwa baseball teams have battled it out on the diamond. Saturday the trio of squads competed at Luther College with Ottumwa (19-6) sweeping the local teams and the Vikes (13-7) besting the Warriors (14-5).

Decorah and Bulldogs
The Vikes and Ottumwa opened the day’s activities with the Bulldogs dominating the offensive attack, handing Decorah a 9-1 loss.
Ottumwa plated its first two runs in the second to open the game. Decorah’s lone run came in the top of the third following a Casey Brickley single that landed him on second due to a Bulldog throwing error, allowing him to score later in the frame. From there it was all Ottumwa who scored four times in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth.
Splitting time on the mound were Fisher Tweten and Landon Kuennen. At the plate, Decorah tallied just three hits by Kaden Alstad, Brickley and Ben Wymer.
“In spite of the result of a loss in this game, we were pleased with many of our at bats against one of the best pitchers we will face all year long. Ottumwa is a very solid team that kept pressure on us to make plays throughout the game,” said Decorah coach Adam Riley.

SW takes on Ottumwa
In game two, Ottumwa jumped out to an early lead before the South Winn was able to cut it to a 10-8 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs would go on to outscore the Warriors 11-1 over the final three innings to secure the 21-9 victory.
“This game got out of hand on our part with free bases and when you compound that by facing a good hitting team, we gave up way too many big innings to be competitive,” said SW Coach Alex Smith.
The Warriors had five pitchers make appearances including Carson Streeter, Parker Timp, Kaden Bullerman, Cody Meyer and Dylan Taylor.
South Winn pounded out nine hits with Jamie Kuennen going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a stolen base. Carson Wenthold and C. Streeter each knocked out two singles as well with Keagen Streeter and Braiden Todd each contributing one.

Vikes vs. Warriors
Wrapping up the day was the neighborhood battle between Decorah and South Winn with the Vikes coming out on top 5-2.
“We are extremely happy for the kids to get a hard fought and well-earned win in this game.  The execution offensively in the later stages of this game combined with solid pitching performances from Brady Bohner and Ethan Holthaus really put us in a position to earn this win,” noted Viking Coach Riley.
South Winn jumped out to an early two-run lead after one inning, having taken advantage of walks issued to brothers Carson and Keagen Streeter. From there the Warriors couldn’t get much going against the Viking pitching having just two hits in the contest.
Decorah was able to tie it in the bottom of the fourth on several Warrior errors, allowing Kaden Alstad and Cade Olson to score. The Vikes took the go ahead runs in the fifth inning with three big runs plated by Brayden Hartl, Alstad and Olson.
“We just had an off game at the plate and if that happens, you really have to be clean on the defensive side of things and we didn’t have that in us in this game,” said SW Coach Smith. “It was great to play at the Luther College field. Thanks to all that were involved in making that happen for our guys to experience a college facility.”
The Vikes had five hits in the contest. With one apiece were Brayden Hartl, Caleb Meyer, Olson, Fisher Tweten and Ben Wymer with Casey Brickley driving in two runs.
Carson Wenthold had a double for the Warriors with Kaden Bullerman coming up with a hit as well.
