Four errors came back to haunt the Decorah baseball team (16-14, 11-9 NEIC) at home, falling to Linn-Mar (20-14) with the Vikes falling to the Lions, 9-2, Wednesday.
Linn-Mar took advantage of two errors and a hit batter, combined with two singles and a double to score five times in the third inning. A Lion double and another Viking error gave the visitors yet another run in the fourth. Linn-Mar finished its scoring with three runs in the fifth, all while holding Decorah to just four baserunners through six frames.
In the bottom of the seventh, Decorah finally gained some momentum with Ethan Holthaus leading the charge on a double. Casey Brickley followed it up with a single and the Vikes loaded the bases when Fisher Tweten drew a walk. A sac fly by Ben Wymer gave Decorah one run with Mason Avila batting in the Vikes’ only other run of the game.
Decorah collected six hits in the contest. Brickley and Holthaus each had two, with a double apiece. Cade Olson rapped out a pair of singles as well.
Playoffs Friday
The Vikes have to prep for their final regular game of the season against Waterloo West Wednesday, July 5, before turning their focus on the road to state. Decorah will battle the WaHawks at home Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m.
The Class 3A postseason brackets were released last week with Decorah set to host Independence Friday, July 7, at 7 p.m. A win moves the Vikes into the semifinal against the winner of the Western Dubuque and Maquoketa matchup Monday, July 10, at a time and location to be determined. Other teams in the Substate 3 bracket are West Delaware, Mount Vernon, Waverly-Shell Rock and Charles City.
