One would have to go back to 2017 since Charles City won against the Decorah girls’ basketball team (15-7) and Wednesday night’s Class 4A Region 2 game was no exception to the rule as the Vikes defeated the Comets 70-15 at home.
Decorah faced Western Dubuque in the Class 4A (16-6) regional semifinal Saturday in Epworth, after the early printing of the Driftless Journal for Presidents Day. A win would put them in the regional final Tuesday, Feb. 20, against the winner of the Waverly-Shell Rock and Bondurant-Farrar contest, also held Saturday night.
Off in a blaze, the Vikes scored the first 13 points of the game, with Decorah’s defense keeping the Comets off the board. At the end of the first, the Vikes garnered a 19-4 lead and kept the ball rolling in the second period. By halftime Decorah had pulled ahead 39-6 and kept Charles City in single digits throughout the second half, outscoring the visitors 31-9.
It was a team effort with seven different Vikes scoring at least three points. Leading the way with 17 points was Yazmeen Whitsitt with Claire Storhoff putting up 15. Liz Bucksa was also in double digits with 11 points. On the board with nine points was Sydney Thompson while Brynn Storhoff added eight. Rounding out the scoring was Renae Wilson with seven and Gabbi Dixon with three.
Decorah will take a 15-7 overall record into the regional semifinal against No. 14 Western Dubuque Saturday night (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m. Charles City ends the year with a 2-20 record.
Scoring – Yazmeen Whitsitt 17; Claire Storhoff 15; Liz Bucksa 11; Sydney Thompson 9; Brynn Storhoff 8; Renae Wilson 7; Gabbi Dixon 3
