During the final week of competition in the regular season, the South Winn girls wrestling team was preparing for one of the biggest meets of the season — the regional meet.
The Warriors will compete in the Class 1A regional meet at East Buchanan at 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31, for a ticket to state with the top two wrestlers in each weight division qualifying for state.

Packing up the gear, the Lady Warriors wandered to Cresco Thursday for a double dual with Crestwood and Charles City, finishing the night with 18 points in each dual loss.
On the mats versus the Comets, freshman Odessa Oyloe won her match at 125 pounds over Lillie Caster, throwing her in 1:46. Gracie Walz (135) and Class 1A No. 5 Maddy Jansen (140) each received forfeits for points.
Squaring off with the host Cadets, three Warriors came away with falls, including Isabelle Goltz at 105 pounds. Goltz turned Kelsey Adams in 2:14, while Walz threw Amber Harmening in 2:39. Jansen put Madi Fritcher-Larson on her back in 1:43.

With the regular season wrapped up, the Warriors took a bus ride to Elkader Friday to compete in the Upper Iowa Conference tournament, coming home with a champion and runner-up.
It was New Hampton/Turkey Valley at the top of the team standings with 151 points followed by Waukon with 127.5 points. South Winn finished the night with 72 points in seventh.
On the mat for two matches, Walz took the 135-pound title. A quarterfinal bye led her to battle teammate Jena Peters who Walz pinned in 1:51. In the final, the freshman put Isabelle White on her back in 53 seconds for gold.
Jansen opened her quest for the 130-pound crown with a fall in 52 seconds over Candy Solovi of Postville. Then in the semifinal, the junior took a 12-8 decision from Class 1A No. 6 Sophie Glaser of NH/TV before coming up short to Class 1A No. 12 (at 135 pounds) Mayleigh Medberry of Central in the final by a 9-7 decision.
Four other Warriors were on the podium as Goltz (105), Oyloe (125) and Peters (135) finished fourth, with Sophia Dvorak taking fifth.
