The South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-5, 2-3 UIC) came up short Tuesday night in West Union, falling 47-33 to UIC leader North Fayette Valley (8-0, 6-0 UIC).
The TigerHawks took the 12-3 lead at the close of the first period, before the Warrior offense came alive, equaling NFV’s 11 points in the second. At the break the home team maintained its nine-point advantage 23-14. NFV continued to stretch its lead in the second half, outscoring South Winn 24-19.
“I thought we played really hard against NFV. We were clearly outsized tonight but we kept battling inside and they were able to make some nice plays over the top of us. Our overall effort was very good and we had a nice balance scoring attack. We just need to stay the course and keep getting better and we will get over the hump soon enough,” said Coach Justin Izer.
Eight Warriors scored at least two points in the contest with Karissa Wenthold leading the way with nine, followed by Aubrey Willey with seven. Alyssa Holthaus dropped in six. Willey and Holthaus were the leaders under the basketball with six rebounds apiece.
The Lady Warriors will host Kee Friday, Dec. 15 to finish this week. In the final week of 2023 action, South Winn will travel to Postville Tuesday, Dec. 19, and host MFL MarMac Thursday, Dec. 21.
