The Decorah boys took to the lanes at Bowlaway Lanes once again Monday in the district tournament, placing fourth with 2,900 points. Baker games were 202, 216, 153, 160 and 170.
Leading the way with games of 226 and 234 was senior captain Tyler Thompson, followed by junior Brendon Hunter (158, 246). Other Vikes competing were Luke Iverson (158, 219), Brody Anfinson (196, 194), Emmit Stemper (177, 192) and Karter Einck (136, 185).
“This was a great team of kids and one of the best I could ever imagine coaching. What a privilege and honor to coach these kids,” said Coach Keith Bruening.
The girls’ squad was in action Tuesday at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo for their district qualifier and also finished fourth with a tally of 2,367. Baker game scores were 161, 154, 156, 151 and 175.
Topping the Decorah squad was Grace Gerleman with games of 170 and 180. Right behind the junior was Rebecca Bruening (156, 193). Also competing for the Vikings were Lexie Hauber (160, 159), Lily Iverson (168, 127), Paige Lange (112, 145) and Annika Lensch (104, 116).
Individual conference
Four members of the Decorah bowling team had a chance to compete in the individual conference meet, held in New Hampton Saturday.
The Vikings send Grace Gerleman, Lexie Hauber, Tyler Thompson and Brendon Hunter.
For the girls, Gerleman had scores of 242, 161 and 164, while Hauber had scores of 182, 193 and 167.
Gerleman qualified seventh for the match play finals. She was paired with the second qualifier, Amanda Ostman of Waverly-Shell Rock, besting the Go-Hawk 266 to 163. In the semifinals, Gerleman took down the No. 3 seed, Lauren Funk of Tripoli, 201 to 193, to advance to the finals. There, the Decorah junior was defeated by Tripoli’s McKenna Schaufenbuel, 224 to 189, to finish second.
For the boys, Thompson had scores of 211, 209 and 232, while Hunter had scores of 233, 245 and 214.
Both Vikings competed well enough to qualify for match play with Thompson seeded sixth and Hunter seventh. There, Hunter bowed out of the competition in the quarterfinal match versus Lee Seggerman of Waverly-Shell Rock, 200 to 181. Thompson defeated Columbus’ Simon Larson in the first round 257 to 182 to meet up with Seggerman in the semifinal, falling 201 to 160. The Decorah senior ended the day in fourth place overall.
