The Decorah girls and boys bowling teams put an exclamation point to the start of the season Tuesday with each defeating Sumner-Fredericksburg at King Pin Entertainment Center in Decorah.
The boys won 3,026 to 2,599 over the Cougars with senior captain Cade Averhoff leading the way. Baker scores were 199, 151, 189, 187 and 222.
Averhoff produced a big night. He had a 278 and 203 to lead the way, with junior Bryce Elsbernd also strong with a 259 and 177. Sophomore Tyler Novak rolled out games of 204 and 215, while Jace Buddenberg added scores of 223 and 190.
Also on the lanes in varsity action were Brock Christensen (183-146) and Timothy Round (202-112).
“I am really happy with the kids and the work ethic they have shown in the first two weeks of practice,” said Coach Keith Bruening.
In girls’ action, the Vikes collected the win 2,332 to 1,820. Baker scores were 124, 190, 162, 183 and 181.
At the top of the girls’ games was Marri Feuerhelm who contributed scores of 171 and 157 (328), followed by Anika Grinna with games of 159 and 164.
Other varsity participants were Rylee Averhoff (130, 150), Karlie Einck (157, 140), Jasera Tweten (122, 127) and Addison Wicklund (129, 135).
“We had the first night jitters, but overall I am pleased with our start to the season,” noted Coach K. Bruening. “We will keep working hard to improve.”
The Vikes have time to work on their games as Decorah isn’t back to competition until Friday, Dec. 1, at Waukon at 4 p.m.
