Six members of the South Winn girls’ wrestling team donned the singlets Friday evening for the Class 1A Region 3 meet at East Buchanan with one left to carry on the season at state.
As a team the Warriors finished with 51 points in 13th place as Class 1A No. 2 East Buchanan ran away with the team title, tallying 230 points.
For the third time in her high school career fifth-ranked Maddy Jansen will make an appearance on the big stage. Wrestling at 135 pounds, Jansen moved directly to the quarterfinal after a pair of byes Friday. There she threw Gracie Kuhn of North Fayette Valley in 2:35, which would be a critical win later. Sparring with Algona’s Sienna Fehr in the semifinal the Warrior junior picked up the fall in 3:33. In the final, Jansen was turned by sixth-ranked Destiny Krum of East Buchanan in 2:45 and was able to take second place without having to wrestleback as she had already defeated NFV’s Kuhn.
As the sixth seed Jansen, who carries a 25-8 record to state, will open her bid for a state title Thursday afternoon against Cecelia Gryp of Williamsburg who is 33-12 overall.
Isabelle Goltz came up shy of her qualifying bid in third place at 105 pounds. A quarterfinal fall to No. 7 Valeria Torres of East Buchanan left the sophomore battling through the back side of the bracket. A bye in the fourth round of the consolations pushed Goltz into the fifth round, where she picked up a 14-0 major decision win over Maria Ordonez of Postville. The Warrior then threw Alburnett’s Carlyn McGraw in 38 seconds in the consolation semifinal and Addison Donahue of Waukon in 2:51 in the third place match. However, her loss to Torres in the quarterfinal did not allow her a wrestle back to try for second.
