Jansen takes silver at Central tourney

With the Thanksgiving break in the rearview mirror, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team was back on the mats Tuesday night at the Central Elkader Girls Tournament with four place winners.
West Delaware won the night with 154 points with Alburnett a close second with 146. The Warriors finished the night with 50 points in 11th place among the 17-team field.
Junior Maddy Jansen was the lone SW grappler to reach the finals. She received a first-round bye at 140 pounds, then put Crystal Goodrich of Central on her back in the first period. In the semifinal, Jansen threw Gracie Kuhn of North Fayette Valley in 5:01 before falling to Union’s Jillian Worthen in 1:28 to earn silver.
At 135 pounds, Gracie Walz won her first two rounds by fall over Chelsea Brumm of St. Ansgar and Oelwein’s Jaylynn Craun. The freshmen dropped her final two matches of the night, a fall to Alburnett’s Lyni Gusick and a 6-1 decision to Josi Munger of Starmont, to take fourth.
Taking fifth at 115 pounds was Violet Schmelzer and sixth went to Sophia Dvorak at 120 pounds.
