Hoops, the Vikes did it again

With just one blemish on their record the Class 3A No. 5 Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-1, 5-1 NEIC) recorded two wins over the weekend.

Sharp shots
It was a lopsided victory Friday at home for the Vikings as they bested Crestwood (1-11, 0-6 NEIC), 80-30.
Decorah held the Cadets to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters in a game that began with the Vikes leading 22-8 just eight minutes in the contest. By halftime the lead grew to 44-12 for Decorah. With the game solidly in hand, the Vikes outscored the visitors 36-18 in the second half.
It was double-double time for sophomore Cael LaFrentz as he put up a game-high 24 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Ben Bockman reached the 1,000-career point mark with 21 points. Putting up 13 points and dishing out 10 assists was Trey McCain.

Teamwork
Taking their game on the road to North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City Saturday night, the Vikes held off a late surge by North Polk (5-9) to win, 62-60.
Falling behind 18-13 in the first quarter, the Vikings rattled off 20 points in the second to take a 33-25 lead at halftime. North Polk made up some ground in the third, pulling to within five, 47-42. It took a balanced approach in the fourth for the Vikes to come away with the two-point win.
Zach Driscoll and B. Bockman had the hot hands with 15 points apiece. Driscoll added three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while B. Bockman had a trio of boards and three assists. For the second time in two days, LaFrentz posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. McCain was also in double figures with 11 points.

This week
Monday the Vikes made up their game at Charles City and are now off until Friday, Jan. 26, when they travel to New Hampton for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off.
