Class 1A wrapped up day one at the 2024 Boys State Wrestling Meet Wednesday night with five South Winn wrestlers taking the mats, picking up 16 points in the seven-way tie for 15th place.
At 113 pounds, No. 12 senior Aiden Feickert took advantage of his first state experience with a 17-4 major decision win over Linca Scarlett of Northwood-Kensett in round one. Putting the brakes on Feicker’s dreams to the title was third-ranked Cooper Hinz of Jesup, who pinned the Warrior in 1:10 to push Feickert into the consolation bracket. Thursday night Feickert will battle Maxon Monat of North Tama in the consolations.
A first-round bye for No. 3 Collin Holm put the Warrior in the spotlight just once Wednesday night against ninth-ranked Mark Gant of Hinton in round two of 144 pounds. In his quest for a second final appearance, Holm threw Gant in 3:30. Now standing in Holm’s way is No. 6 Jordan Dusenberry of Wilton as the two prep to square off in Thursday night’s quarterfinal.
It was an 8-3 decision lost for 150-pound Landen Schnuelle in round one as the sophomore dropped his first match to fifth-ranked Reece Klosterman of Alburnett. Looking to stay on the path to the podium, Schnuelle will step on to the mat in the second round of consolations Thursday night against No. 8 Rory Prazak II of Central Springs.
In his second state wrestling experience, 165-pound Kyle Kuboushek advanced to round two with a 7-1 decision over Jordan Orr of West Monona-Whiting. Justin Wirtz of Emmetsburg managed to pushed the 11th-ranked SW sophomore into the consolation bracket in round two by a 3-1 decision. Shenandoah’s Jacob Rystrom will battle Kuboushek in round two of the consolations as the Warrior looks to stay in the hunt for a medal.
Parker Timp picked up two wins Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinals. First in his way at 215 pounds was Coby Pierce of Kuemper Catholic who Timp easily defeated by a 17-4 major decision. Round two was a big tougher against Lake Mills’ Wyatt Hanna, who was ranked ninth. It took overtime for the Warrior to win the 6-4 decision. In Thursday’s quarterfinal, Timp will battle top-ranked Eli Green of Interstate 35.
