Overnight rain showers softened the course at Tri-City Golf Club near Luana, but the weather cooperated for the rest of the day as the girls teams in the Upper Iowa Conference competed for the league title Tuesday.
North Fayette Valley ran away with the team title with a 406 total, followed by MFL MarMac in second place with a 431 score and South Winn finished in third place with a 446. Turkey Valley ended the day with a 483 in sixth place.
South Winn’s Katrina Hageman was overall medalist with a 93, followed by Kaci Kregel of Clayton Ridge in the runner-up spot with a 98.
Warrior numbers
Carding rounds of 50 and 43, South Winn junior Katrina Hageman was crowned the best in the UIC, five strokes ahead of second place and earning All-UIC recognition. Annie Ondrashek also notched All-UIC honors in a three-way tie for 15th with a 113 (59-54). Also counting for the Warriors were Brooke Steffans (63-54=117) and Paige Jaster (69-54=123). TV review
The Trojans were led by outstanding freshman Annika Bodensteiner (52-61=113) as she earned ALL-UIC honors with a tie for 15th place overall. Ironically, her brother Calvin also finished in a tie for 15th place as well to notch All-UIC honors on the boys’ side just one day earlier.
Shooting her best round of the season, Mariah Throndson was one stroke away from the awards podium with a 114 (58-56). Halle Weber (64-62=126) and Morgan Vsetecka (70-60=130) also counted for the Trojans. Completing the Turkey Valley postseason scorecard was Sofia Rivera (70-65=135) and Abby Schmitt (72-70=142.).
“The girls played hard and did a nice job. We didn’t quite catch Postville but came very close. Five of our six girls shot a lower score in the second round than they did in the first round which is great to see,” said TV Coach John Reicks.
Regional
The girls will be on the links again Friday, May 12, in first-round Class 1A regional action. South Winn will compete at the Nashua Town & Country Club in Region 4A against Clarksville, Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, Riceville, Rockford, Saint Ansgar and West Fork. The Trojans will be on the Maple Hill Country Club course in Tripoli for Region 4B with Don Bosco, Dunkerton, Postville, Starmont, Tripoli, Wapsie Valley, Waterloo Christian and West Central. Those moving on from each regional will play again Wednesday, May 17, at 10 a.m., with Region 4C teams and individuals at Lone Pine Golf Course in Edgewood.
The top two teams in each region advance to Regional Finals. The top six individuals (and those tied for 6th place) also advance to the next level of play, regardless of if they are on a qualifying team or not. All individual ties must be broken (except for 6th place ties) to determine each golfer’s final rank.
