Go-Hawks push past Decorah in second half

It was a rough two-game stretch for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-7, 6-4 NEIC) as the Vikings fell to Waverly-Shell Rock and Clear Creek-Amana over the weekend.

   It was a rough two-game stretch for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (11-7, 6-4 NEIC) as the Vikings fell to Waverly-Shell Rock and Clear Creek-Amana over the weekend.

   Following a close first half, Waverly-Shell Rock (15-4, 9-1 NEIC) pulled away in the second to defeat Decorah Friday night, 73-62.
   The game was close at the start with the Go-Hawks taking a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. The Vikes picked up the pace a bit in the second, pulling even at 27-27 with 3:15 to play and again with 53 seconds before the half, but continued to trail 34-32 at halftime. Decorah struggled to score to score in the third frame and trailed 48-41 with eight minutes to go.
   The Vikes were led by Tate Johnson with 22 points. Also in double figures was Ben Bockman with 18 points, five assists and four rebounds. Matthew Bockman just missed the double digit mark with nine points, while Kaiden Quandahl was strong under the hoop, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

   Saturday, the Vikes were on the road, falling Clear Creek-Amana (5-15), 74-70.
   Decorah trailed 17-14 after one quarter and went into the locker room behind 35-28, a hole the Vikes couldn’t climb out of in the second half.
   Four Vikes were in double figures with B. Bockman leading the way with 21 points and nine rebounds. Johnson put up 14 points to go with five rebounds, while Ethan Holthaus had 12 points and five boards. Quandahl picked up the double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

   The Vikes have two non-conference games left on the schedule. Tuesday, Feb. 14, Decorah will travel to Manchester to play West Delaware, at 7:30 p.m.
