As the postseason comes into focus, the Decorah bowling teams have been busy on the lanes, competing in a baker tournament over the weekend and a dual Monday night.
At Independence
Qualifying into match play as the fourth seed Saturday, the Decorah girls team defeated Independence before falling to Class 3A Dubuque Senior. Moving into the consolation bracket, the Vikes took down Vinton to claim third in the 18-team tournament held at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
“All of our girls performed well, and we were excellent on spare shooting all day,” said coach Keith Bruening. “The girls bowled 24 baker games and I am awful proud of them.”
In boys action, the Vikings qualified seventh for match place and were seeded against Cedar Falls, who took out Decorah.
“Our boys bowled their guts out all day in this elite tournament. We had fun and learned what we have to do to win,” noted Bruening.
Dual win
Despite competing in many baker games Saturday, the Viking squads came out on top of Sumner-Fredericksburg at Thunder Lanes in Sumner Monday night.
The girls moved to 8-0 with their 2,297 to 2,104 win. Baker game scores were 120, 159, 181, 116 and 135.
Setting the pace for Decorah was junior Karlie Einck with a 348 (151, 197). Addison Wicklund provided individual games of 131 and 182, while Jasera Tweten rolled a 181 and 137. Others on the lanes in varsity action were Rylee Averhoff (198, 118), Marri Feuerhelm (139, 152) and Asmere Jensen (119, 133).
“The girls struggled to find the pocket all night but we got the win,” said coach K. Bruening.
Improving to 7-1, the boys defeated the Cougars 2,679 to 2,458. Baker game scores were 174, 196, 194, 177 and 202.
Bruening noted that the Vikes had difficult lane conditions; however, they got the job done with Tyler Notvak leading the way with a 390 (185, 205) followed by Jordan Sims’ 369 (202, 167). Also competing on varsity were Jace Buddenberg (162, 121), Bryce Elsbernd (169, 144), Alex Maki (141, 138) and Cain Monreal-Rice (190, 181).
