It was the first round of Class 1A regional competition for the South Winn and Turkey Valley girls’ golf teams at the Tri City Golf Course near Luana Friday, May 13. The hilly terrain and warm, windy conditions created trouble for many golfers, especially on the back nine at the end of a grueling and tiring day.
When the last ball was put in the cup, Ed-Co was the regional champs with a 427 with Starmont fashioning a 455 to advance to the next round. South Winn came through with a 478 in fourth place, while Turkey Valley carved out a 527, finishing seventh. Ed-Co linksters swept the top two honors.
Lowering their scores
A highlight of the day was the play of Trojan senior Tess Franzen, who tied for fifth-place overall with a 110 to advance to the second-round regional meet. It was a rough start to say the least for the senior veteran as she carded a 12 and an 11 on the first two holes of the tournament before bouncing back in a big way. Using her trademark of mental toughness and perseverance, the two-time all-UIC performer shaved off 12 strokes from her first-round tally of 61 to card a sizzling 49 on the back nine for her 110 total and a berth in the next round of regional play.
Sophomore Mariah Throndson (144), was equally impressive as she shot 22 strokes lower over her second nine than her first nine (83-61). Junior newcomer Abby Schmitt (6569-134) and freshman Morgan Vsetecka (71-68-139) also counted for the Trojans. Junior Alison Leibold (67–78-145) and freshman Kaitlyn Schroeder (99-97-196) also toured the hilly topography at Tri-City.
“I was proud of the way the girls battled with four of the six Lady Trojan girls scoring lower on their second round of the day than their first round,” said Trojan coach John Reicks. “I just need all the girls to be more consistent from beginning to end and find a way to overcome their pre-meet jitters. With Tess Franzen our only senior, we have the bulk of our roster returning next season. The girls just need to get out and play a lot of golf this summer and watch their scores improve dramatically.”
SW highlights
Elizabeth Bohr led South Winn on the links with a 111 (56-55), while Ruthie Frana fashioned a 114 (57-57). Coming through with a 126 (66-60) was Brooke Steffans. Katrina Hageman was one stroke behind Steffans at 127 (62-65). Paige Jaster put up a 148 (80-68) for the day and Annisten Ondrashek concluded the season with a 151 (72-79).
