Duwe homers three times in two games

It was a good start to the week for the Decorah softball team (8-7, 4-1 NEIC) as the Vikes picked up two wins.

Make-up game
Monday, the Vikes made up a postponed game at Waverly-Shell Rock (5-11, 3-4 NEIC), coming home victorious, 6-2.
As the lead-off batter for Decorah, Bryar Duwe started the game with a solo shot over the left-centerfield fence. The Go-Hawks tied it in the bottom of the first before the Vikes added two runs in the second and two in the third. Leading 5-1, Decorah gave up a run in the bottom of the third. Capping off the scoring in the seventh was freshman Lauren Luzum with Decorah’s second home run of the game.
Decorah tallied 12 hits, including the home runs by Duwe and Luzum. Autumn Schaller had a double, while Clara Hjelle went 3-for-4 at the plate. Dylin Thompson provided two hits and drove in a run. Other hits were had by Lani Hubka, Lillian Olson, Sydney Kipp and Lydia Frank.
Hjelle was the winner, going the seventh innings. She gave up seven hits and struck out two.

Conference
Tuesday, the Vikes traveled to Charles City (8-8, 3-3 NEIC) to take on the Comets, picking up their second win in as many days, 11-5.
Just as she had Monday, Duwe opened the game with a solo home run to give Decorah the early 1-0 lead. In the second frame, the Vikes sent a total of 14 batters to the plate, scoring five more. Charles City matched them in the bottom half of the second to score all five of their runs in the contest. Decorah padded its lead with two in the fourth and Duwe’s second homer of the game in the fifth drove in the Vikings’ final two runs.
Decorah managed nine hits. Duwe had three of them with the two home runs and a single for three RBI. Hubka was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Olson, Luzum and Schaller had the other three singles for the Vikes.
Hjelle went all seven innings on the mound, giving up seven hits and striking out five.

This week
The Vikes will host New Hampton in a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader Friday, June 16, at 5:30 p.m. They will not be on the diamond again until Tuesday, June 20, when they travel to Waukon for a varsity twinbill at 5:30 p.m.
