Deep breath; TV survive EB, 48-45

It wasn’t exactly the start they were looking for the but final outcome of Monday’s Class 1A District 5 quarterfinal made Turkey Valley fans happy as the Trojan boys (14-8) took the first step toward a state tournament bid as the Trojans defeated East Buchanan at home, 48-45. East Buchanan finishes the season with a record of 10-12.
With the win, Turkey Valley will face Maquoketa Valley (15-7) in the semifinals Thursday, Feb. 16, on the Wildcats’ home floor at 7 p.m. The district final, which will pit the winner against either No. 2 North Linn (21-0) or South Winn (14-8) is Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined.

   In Monday’s contest, fouls plagued the Trojans throughout the game. However, TV managed to pull ahead to 14-8 with 1:02 remaining in the opening period. The Buccaneers sunk 3-of-4 free throws in the closing 47 seconds to pull back within three at 14-11. Calvin Bodensteiner kicked off the second frame with a trey with another coming from Caleb Kurtenbach. A second three-pointer by Bodensteiner to help put the Trojans on top 28-19 at halftime.
   Turkey Valley led by as many as 10 in the third quarter as the two teams traded baskets for much of the period. East Buchanan managed to get the Trojan lead cut to 43-35 with eight minutes to play. The foul trouble the Trojans were in by the fourth didn’t deter the Red and White from pushing ahead, but it did allow the Buccaneers numerous opportunities to cut the gap at the charity stripe. With 5:04 to go, East Buchanan was threatening as the Buccaneers were within two, 43-41. After nearly four scoreless minutes for the Trojans, a trey by East Buchanan knotted the score at 44-44 with 2:14 left to play. Bodensteiner connected from the floor to put TV back on top 46-44 with 58 ticks on the clock and Oliver Schmitt put up the final two points from the free throw line with 10.4 seconds left as the Buccaneer offense was nearly shut down in the closing minute.
   Bodensteiner stepped up for the Trojans scoring 22 points and grabbing three steals. Schmitt put in nine to go with five rebounds and five assists, while Chase Hayek had six points and nine rebounds.
