Speed and experience proved to be the deciding factor Tuesday night as the Decorah boys’ basketball team (5-0, 2-0 NEIC) quickly wore down a young Crestwood (0-6, 0-1 NEIC) squad in the 95-35 Northeast Iowa Conference victory.
The Vikes posted 23 points in the first quarter and 33 in the second to put the game away early, making it 56-17 at halftime. Decorah outscored the Cadets 39-18 in the second half.
“We challenged our guys to keep their intensity and focus and they met that challenge. We need to keep improving with each practice and game, and this group has the capabilities to do so,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
Four Vikes hit double digits, with Ben Bockman connecting for a team-high 22 points. On his heels with another hot hand with 21 points was sophomore Cael LaFrentz, while Matthew Bockman put in 18. Zach Driscoll provided 14.
Back at home Friday, Dec. 15, the Vikes will welcome New Hampton to Decorah for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off. Next week, the Red and Blue will finish off the 2023 portion of the season on the road at Waukon Tuesday, Dec. 19, and Hudson Thursday, Dec. 21.
