The Decorah boys wrestling team had a solid final week of the regular season in preparation for the Northeast Iowa Conference meet Saturday.
Two wins
It was a couple of dual wins for the Vikes who took part in a triangular at New Hampton Thursday. Decorah first defeated Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 56-20 before edging the host Chickasaws 44-32.
Opening the night on the mat against the G-H/V Cardinals at 138 pounds was Will Larson with a fall in 2:00 minutes over Aiden Schulze. Needing just 31 seconds Kasen Tyler (144) pinned Dennis Berry before Justin Fortman (150) threw Zander Rosaur in 43 seconds. Decorah’s Steven Munoz (165) and Bradan Darling (175) received forfeits, followed by Class 2A No. 5 Tommy Sexton (190) took on Class 2A No. 8 Parker Moritz and came out on top with a 9-0 major decision. It was a fall in 1:44 for 215-pound Ethan Kuennen as the freshman turned Nathan Maas. Back down at the lower weights, Meison Tollefson got a 23-3 tech fall over Gunner Fry at 106 pounds. Gavin Knutson picked up the Vikes’ final pin of the night at 126 pound in 37 seconds over Samuel Katter. Rounding out the wins with a 17-2 tech fall was Decorah junior Mason Avila at 132 pounds over Keith Johnson.
Ending the night on the mats against New Hampton/Turkey Valley, the Vikes took home victories in eight of the 14 weight divisions. At 113 pounds, Lucas Wymer got the 18-2 tech fall over Dominick Reicks with Knutson (126) throwing Colin Shatek in 22 seconds. Michael Clement also got the pin at 132 pounds, turning Braiden Schaufenbuel in 1:13. Tyler defeated Jayden Bucknell by a 16-9 decision at 144 pounds. Later Class 2A No. 7 Bill Fullhart put Chase Humpal on his back as the first period ended for the fall at 165 pounds. Sexton threw Jackson Kellogg in 1:40 with Kuennen (215) putting Roy Barron’s shoulders on the mat in 2:47. Tollefson (106) received a forfeit for Viking points.

At CPU duals
Saturday, the Vikings traveled to Center Point-Urbana to take part in a dual tournament, finishing 2-1 on the day. Decorah picked up victories over Vinton-Shellsburg 57-22 and the hosts 58-10. The lone loss came to Class 2A No. 7 West Delaware 41-31.
Gavin Knutson (126) was one of the Vikings with a perfect performance. He threw West Delaware’s Jarrett Engel in 53 seconds. Battling Jonah Clemons of Center Point-Urbana, he got the fall in 41 seconds and earned an 18-1 tech fall over Gavin Sanders of Vinton-Shellsburg.
Competing in two duals at 132 pounds, Mason Avila picked up a 14-6 major decision over Kooper Waugh of West Delaware and threw Ryan Shipley of Vinton-Shellsburg in 3:27. Michael Clement competed at 132 pounds in the Center Point-Urbana dual and won by tech fall, 16-0.
At 138 pounds, Class 2A No. 10 Will Larson turned Rylan Gaul of West Delaware in 2:50 and threw Vinton-Shellsburg’s Tate Schminke in 1:33. In the final dual of the day, Larson earned a 19-3 tech fall over Gavin Reed of Center Point-Urbana.
It was a pair of pins and a tech fall for Bill Fullhart who wrestled at 165 pounds during the day. The sophomore took care of Ryan Hilby of West Delaware in 2:19 and Brayden Hakert of Center Point-Urbana in 55 seconds then disposed of Jackson Hansel of Vinton-Shellsburg by a 15-0 tech fall.
