A year removed from both girls and boys qualifying for state, the Decorah bowling teams have done it again in 2024.
Girls first
Monday it was the girls to get the fun started as the Vikings hosted one of the four Class 2A state qualifying meets at King Pin Entertainment Center.
In the 15-baker game team tournament, Decorah posted the top score of 2,675 over Maquoketa’s 2,587. Baker game scores were 208, 209, 199, 158, 171, 171, 180, 152, 208, 167, 176, 161, 157, 164 and 194. Members of the title team were Marri Feuerhelm, Rylee Averhoff, Anika Grinna, Jasera Tweten, Karlie Einck and Addison Wicklund. Alternates for state are Asmere Jensen and Kennedy Riehle.
The Viking girls also had three individual qualifiers with top eight from each location punching a ticket to state. Decorah sophomore Karlie Einck was the individual champion with a total of 616 (227, 182, 207). Senior Anika Grinna finished fourth overall with a 580 (138, 220, 222). Also qualifying with a sixth-place finish was sophomore Jasera Tweten with a 572 (196, 195, 181).
Boys at the top too
The Decorah boys took their turn at the Class 2A state qualifier Tuesday, finishing as the district champs at King Pin Entertainment Center. Baker scores for the 15 games were 204, 267, 218, 228, 224, 246, 165, 173, 206, 233, 249, 246, 161, 219 and 255.
Tyler Novak was a rockstar for Decorah all day, racking up 22 strikes in 15 games. Jordan Sims was a perfect lead-off guy for the Vikes, starting with a strike in almost every game. Cade Averhoff showed his senior leadership in the anchor spot, finished the day with 26 strikes.
Individually the Viking boys had a trio of individual qualifiers as Brock Christensen finished second. Sims finished fourth, while Averhoff took the eighth and final qualifying spot. Christensen completed the individual portion of the tournament with games of 227, 173 and 119. Sims wrapped up the day with a 180, 256 and 201. Averhoff completed his quest for a state bid with a 242, 188 and 181.
State information
The 2024 State Bowling Tournament runs Monday, Feb. 19 through Wednesday, Feb. 21, with the Class 2A individual girls and boys competing Monday, and the Viking teams will be on the lanes Wednesday at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo.
