It was another close contest for the Decorah softball team (1-1) Tuesday as the Vikings hosted South Winn (1-1) in a rescheduled game from last week. This one wasn’t in the Vikings’ favor, as the Warriors pulled out the 3-2 victory.
The game opened with excitement as Warrior designated hitter Addison Timp reached first base on an error, setting up Britney Hageman for a two-run blast over the left field fence to give South Winn the early 2-0 lead. Decorah managed to get baserunners in each of the first three innings, but it wasn’t until the fourth when the Vikings scratched a run across the plate. Dylin Thompson’s single and a bunt by Lillian Olson put the Vikings in a scoring position to cut the Warriors’ lead in half, 2-1.
However, South Winn battled back for another run as Aubrey Willey singled and stole second. A single by Adrienne Winings and an error allowed Willey to score in the fifth. But Decorah wasn’t going down easy, as Lauren Luzum singled in the sixth. Running for Luzum, Anna Knaack later scored on a Sydney Kipp single to make it 3-2. The Vikings threatened in the bottom of the seventh but left two baserunners stranded as the game ended on an infield fly rule out.
South Winn freshman Aubrey Gesing earned the win with nine strikeouts, giving up two runs on eight hits and one walk. Clara Hjelle also recorded nine Ks and gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk.
