Opportunity was there for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (5-11, 4-7 UIC) to put a tally in the win column as the Trojans hosted Spring Grove (16-2) Thursday night, dropping the contest 48-40.
“I like the way we competed against a very good Spring Grove team. We had our chances but just couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch,” said Coach Steve Hoffert.
The contest was back and forth in the first half with the Spring Grove Lions clinging to a 15-12 lead in the first quarter. The Trojans attacked the basket better in the second period, leading to a 27-22 halftime lead. TV gave up that lead in the third when the Lions struck for 17 points and carried a 39-33 advantage into the final eight minutes of play.
Mariah Throndson and Delaney Busta led the offensive attack with nine points apiece, while Addison Steinlage pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and came away with three steals.
The Trojans have a busy week with four games in five days that starts on the road at Central Elkader Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, TV is at North Fayette Valley, then are home against Postville Friday and Clayton Ridge Saturday.
