By Becky Walz,
After a disappointing loss to North Fayette Valley earlier last week, the South Winn boys basketball team (13-5, 8-4 UIC) bounced back with wins over West Central and New Hampton.
Stout defense
The defense stole the show at West Central (1-18, 0-13 UIC) Friday night as the Warriors defeated the Blue Devils 73-35 in Maynard.
South Winn never gave West Central a chance, springing ahead 20-10 after the first eight minutes. The lead grew to 44-25 by halftime before the Warrior defense put the brakes on the Blue Devils’ scoring, giving up just 10 points in the second half.
The Warriors combined for 27 steals in the contest, with Braiden Todd leading the way with seven minutes to go with his game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Freshman Jordan Einck put up 17 points and came away with five steals. Joining the pair in double figures was Carver Wenthold who came off the bench for a spark of 12 points. Kaden Barton-Franzen topped the rebound column for the Warriors with seven.

Just enough
A slow start caught the Warriors off guard Monday against New Hampton; however, South Winn’s offense caught fire in the second half to pass the Chickasaws (3-15, 0-7 NEIC) for the 67-60 victory.
New Hampton won the first frame 25-13 and remained in control of the lead at halftime 28-23. South Winn put up 17 points in each of the third and fourth periods while limiting the Chickasaws on the board to edge the NEIC squad.
Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
