Hosting its first meet of the season, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team went 1-3 in duals action Tuesday night as it hosted Central Elkader, Clear Lake and New Hampton/Turkey Valley.
First on the mat against the home Warriors was Central Elkader who fell 43-30 to the hosts. SW took control of four matches and received forfeits in four others. Freshman Clayton Kuboushek outlasted Adam Kloser to earn the 8-5 decision at 120 pounds. Later, at 150 pounds, it was Eric Greve throwing Mack Perrinjaquet in 3:56 with Landen Schnuelle picking up the 17-4 major decision over Preston Kulper at 157 pounds. Kyle Kuboushek (165) capped off the wins with a fall in 51 seconds, turning Parker Funke. Awarded forfeits were Gavin Thuente (113), Matthew Horstman (190), Ray Lienau (215) and Kolton Brummond (285).
South Winn fell short against Clear Lake in round two, 36-34, despite four Warrior pins. Thuente turned Hayden Shear in 1:17 at 113 pounds. Kuboushek picked up his second win of the night at 120 pounds over John Hamilton with fall in 2:41. In 30 seconds, senior Lucas Weiss put Cayden Vanvochris on his back to win at 144 pounds and Kuboushek got his second pin of the night in 1:01 over Cayden Campbell at 165 pounds. Steven Andera was victorious with a 12-3 major decision at 138 pounds while Greve received a forfeit at 150 pounds to aid the SW effort.
Wrestling powerhouse New Hampton/Turkey Valley controlled the third match of the night, winning 44-23 over South Winn. Four Warriors emerged victorious including Schnuelle (157) with a fall in 51 seconds over Tate Schwickerath. In 1:58, Kuboushek (165) earned the 18-1 tech fall over Cade Carpenter. It was a pair of decision wins for Lienau (215) and Brummond (285). Lienau overcame Roy Barron by 7-0, while Brummond held on to win 3-1 over Kyson Kielman. Thuente received his second forfeit of the night.
