When I was in my early 20s I found a “new” car of my dreams at a local dealer, we’ll call Steve’s Autos. We agreed upon a price, with Steve’s promise to fix a few obviously needed repairs. After paying for and driving the car home the next day, I realized upon closer inspection that the promised repairs hadn’t been made. Furious, I called Steve and told him I was bringing the car back for a full refund. After a couple personal insults, he claimed that he had made the repairs. When I explained the proof that he hadn’t, he said, “OK, I’ll make the repairs, or you can trade it for another car on our lot.” I flatly told him I had already cancelled the check. After a moment of silence, he said “Bring the car back, Tim.” I did, and never went back.
I am reminded of that shady car dealer by how Alliant Energy is again, like 2018, purposely misleading Decorah ratepayers, and scaring them into believing a yes vote on March 4 automatically commits us to an MEU — not true — that we’ll spend taxpayer dollars to start an MEU — not true — we’ll have higher electric rates — not true — service will be unreliable — not true — and the cost of Alliant’s electrical infrastructure is $85.6 million. Not. True.
Remember the $50 million billboards they plastered around Decorah in 2018, and how the Iowa Utilities Commission reprimanded them for purposely misleading voters? Interestingly, their updated estimate represents almost an 85 percent increase in value on a system that generally depreciates.
A disclaimer on Alliant’s new study by Concentric Energy says, “This preliminary feasibility study is based on public information and non-public information provided to Concentric Energy Advisors, Inc. by Alliant Energy. Concentric did not independently validate such information and does not provide an opinion on its accuracy. Moreover, this preliminary feasibility study is not an audit and was not undertaken to express a financial or legal opinion or to provide investment advice.” Right there! This study is not verified, and it is not intended as investment advice.
Like any feasibility study done without the oversight of the Iowa Utilities Commission, it’s all just Alliant’s biased estimates. And this study is laden with bias.
Moreover, Alliant is including millions in costs that the city would not need to incur, including purchasing their new $15 million regional service center, where over 85 percent of the customers served by this facility don’t live in the Decorah area. They included the cost of buying the $3 million battery near Venneheim, which was paid for by federal dollars. They also included roughly $16 million for building a new substation and its reintegration, which would be unnecessary if we served the entire Decorah area. They also throw in more inflationary costs, labeled as “growing concerns.”
Right. And I’m an astronaut.
When you strip away all the unnecessary fluff used to scare us, you come up with around $30 million. It could very well be lower than this, and yes, it could be more. However, even $30 million is tangible when buying a $10-$15 million/year business that isn’t bound by investor dividends and a multimillion dollar annual CEO salary. It’s more than tangible, it’s a good investment.
The only way to get the real numbers that detail actual costs and revenues verified by the IUC is with a yes vote. Otherwise, it’s just Alliant’s words, which 2018 taught us is worth no more than that of Steve the car dealer.
Alliant is treating its Decorah customers — yes, we are customers — just like Steve treated me. They took us for suckers once, and now they’re doing it again. It flies in the face of the basic business principle I learned years ago. Treat every customer like you would want to be treated. If not, expect your customers to look elsewhere, which is all Decorah is doing, at a minimal cost.
Lastly, for those who didn’t attend the recent presentation by the Ames Municipal Electric Utility CEO Donald Kom, please consider watching it. It can be viewed at Decorah Power’s Facebook page. At the end of his very informative presentation, Kom said, “There’s nothing about municipalization that should scare you.”
