Thank you for the memories North Winneshiek

By Dwight Seegmiller, Iowa City

For many of us NWHS alumni, the auction of the North Winneshiek School was an event that brought back many memories.
When the new school building opened in 1964, its student base was primarily students similar to me who came from one room country schools and were accustomed to using outhouses and carrying drinking water to the country school from a neighboring farmstead. The new school was a luxury facility we were all proud to be a part of and the teachers and staff created a family atmosphere that was supportive of each other and small enough to provide individual attention. It created a learning environment that gave us rural kids the educational tools and skillsets to pursue the careers of our dreams. From our 1970 graduating class of 32 we produced successful teachers,  farmers, entrepreneurs, an IT specialist, a Los Angeles TV host, a chair of the county board of supervisors, a school administrator, an MD practicing in Pittsburgh, an executive with the Boston Port Authority, a grain merchant, an import/export owner and a couple of bankers.
The October 2022 auction date for the school had special significance to me as it was 50 years after my election as National FFA President in October 1972. This experience only happened due to my quality education at NWHS and the wonderful guidance and support of our Vocational Agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, Clayton Wangsness.
The lesson learned is it’s not the bricks and mortar that prepare the student for life’s challenges and adventures. It is the dedicated individuals inside those walls who make the difference. Thank you, North Winneshiek for providing the environment to make that difference.
