Salute to The Getup and Seed Savers Exchange

By Ellen Drewes-Stoen, Decorah

Dear Editor,
November is National American Indian Heritage Month. I wish to commend the Getup of Decorah and Seed Savers Exchange for doing their part for sharing, honoring, and supporting Native Americans and Indigenous people during this time, as well as into the future.
In accordance with this celebration, the Meskwaki Native American tribe called upon 66 Iowa schools to remove their mascot names and rebrand their athletic programs. Just recently, Mason City school stepped up to demonstrate their support and respect for Native Americans and Indigenous people by dropping their “Mohawk” mascot name. By doing so, Mason City school administrators have acknowledged that their mascot name not only hurt others, it was disrespectful. Indeed, the act of cultural appropriation does matter!
That said, it is time for three NE Iowa schools, all in the immediate area, to take action, remove their offensive mascot names and rebrand. These schools are:  South Winneshiek, Allamakee, and New Hampton. These schools have an opportunity to do what is right by dropping the names “Warriors,” “Indians,” and “Chickasaw.” Why? Over the years, as we have grown, we now know better. We have learned that cultural appropriation is wrong. Times they are a-changing and, more importantly, this is the time to do the right thing. Remove. Replace. Reconcile.
