Dear Editor,
After looking at the Thursday, Jan. 21 opinion page, I could not make up my mind whether to sit down and start repudiating all the misinformation or call a priest to perform an exorcism. Let us give the former a try.
First, let us address the main theme of everyone’s editorial, the Wednesday, Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol building. I will not use the term insurrection because those that used that term here have been rather silent about calling other acts of violence, like the now months long siege of Portland, where they are actually trying to topple the government, an insurrection or worried about the “bloodshed” and “Nazism” on display.
To be sure, all of us patriots, who do love our country, put what happened at the Capitol building and the socialist/communist violence over the last four years across America in the same bucket. We true patriots understand, as our founders did, John Locke’s philosophy that a legal insurrection can occur only when all legislative avenues to solve a people’s grievances has been exhausted. That is what the Declaration of Independence spelled out and made the American Revolution a legal one. That was never the case in any of these acts of ignorance and we condemn them all. Now let us address some of the musings individually.
Glenice Rhodes: You shout democracy, democracy, democracy, that we live in a democracy, and that it provides us with our freedom. To begin with, a democracy is the rule of the majority without the protection of the minority. It is the last thing our founders wanted. We also do not have freedom. Freedom is the rule of the powerful, where they may do as they wish without regard to the weak. We live in a representative republic which is the rule of the majority with respect to the rights of the minority. We are not guaranteed freedom but liberty, which is freedom tempered by morality.
Jenny Kuderer, you state: “Let us not allow the evil of a riotous mob to obscure the light that we can still bring to the communal incandescence of our nation’s commitment to justice and truth.” Being from Minnesota, I hope you have been applying the same standards to the bloodshed and pillaging that has been plaguing your state and the rest of America for the last four dark years.
Kirsten Olsen: The main job of our government, per the constitution, is to protect the rights of American citizens. To that end, President Trump rebuilt our military readiness; made other countries start paying their fair share for their own defense; brought our troops home along with almost 200 American hostages being held in foreign countries; killed terrorist leaders planning to attack American service personnel; negotiated four Middle East Peace Treaties (for which he has received three Nobel Peace Prize nominations); stunned the world by personally stepping across the DMZ in North Korea to try and end the nuclear stalemate there; and for the first time in 40 years, started no wars.
Domestically, he secured our Southern border which assisted in drastically cutting back on drug trafficking, human trafficking and child sex trafficking; rounded up and deported more than 3000 thugs known as MS-13 members; pushed for and signed the First Step Criminal Reform Act which affected mainly the minority community and that the last four Presidents said they would do but lied; and appointed three constitutionalists to the Supreme Court along with a record number to the lower Federal courts.
Club 45 will retain its name to honor the fact that, constitutionally, Donald Trump has been one of the best Presidents in a long time and that does not even take into consideration all the economic policies that have benefited us. We will continue to counter all the empty accusations and misinformation that is now swirling out there with the dissemination of knowledge and true unity that is the hallmark of American exceptionalism. But we’ll keep the priest’s phone number handy just in case.
