MEU: pipe dream or reality?

By Dave Olson, Decorah

When I voted “no” to the city of Decorah establishing and operating a municipal electric utility seven years ago, I was convinced it just was not financially feasible. While there were many other negative factors against Decorah establishing an MEU, the driving factor was that it was just going to be too expensive and put the city of Decorah and its taxpayers in a perilous financial position for many years.

The latest preliminary feasibility study by Concentric Energy Advisors — go to www.alliantenergy.com/Decorah — confirms again in a big way that the cost of Decorah establishing and operating a MEU is just not financially feasible. The estimated costs just blow this deal out of the water. Note: the information provided by Alliant Energy to Concentric Energy Advisors for this study should be all the city council needs to make the intelligent decision to give up on a MEU.

My concern is not that Decorah will establish a MEU — it will never work — but that a “yes” vote will enable the city council under the misguided direction of a few council members to waste a lot of taxpayer money and time finding that out. That money and time would be much better spent on many other more important issues facing our community — better streets, new fire department and city hall, a community recreation center, etc.

If you do not want the city wasting your hard earned tax dollars, vote “no” on March 4 and put this MEU pipe dream to rest for good!
