Local show of support planned for veterans, support services

By Catherine Pardee, Decorah

On Friday, March 14, 2025, there will be a march for our veterans in our nation’s capital at noon. At the same time — by time zone — Americans will march in all 50 state capitals.

Here in Decorah, all are welcome to meet outside at noon on Water Street next to the Oneota Grocery Co-op. Because of the lack of time to arrange a march in our streets, we can gather there as one body to join the national support events for our veterans in real time.

To many Americans of all stripes, we feel as if we are in the middle of an earthquake of an intensity that we never felt possible. For Midwesterners, maybe it feels more like an all-consuming tornado or derecho, because that is more likely to happen in our neck of the woods. Here the storm is now, on all our doorsteps, not somebody else’s, and it is terrifying, disorienting and depressing.

Our veterans have been here to protect our democracy for 250 years. Many have given their lives for us or suffered indescribable physical or mental pain for their dedication. With the news that their support systems are being shredded indiscriminately, and their government jobs are on the chopping block, they need our support more than ever.

There are and will be more groups of Americans who are anxious about how they will pay their rent, feed their families and meet their other commitments. We can gather in thought and deed for them at another time. On this Friday’s momentous day of support for our vets, I am hoping that reaching out to each other in any way we can will be healing for us all.
