Letter in response to Senator Klimesh’s March 4 “Klimesh’s Corner” column regarding Iowa voting laws

Dear Editor,
I worked with Mike Klimesh for many years when I was postmaster in Decorah and he was the plant manager at Graphics in Calmar. I always found him to be well informed, fair minded and reasonable. That’s why I was so disappointed when I read the Klimesh’s Corner in the Thursday, March 4 Decorah Public Opinion concerning the change in Iowa’s election laws. He claims the changes will make voting more secure without one bit of evidence that it’s true. In fact, evidence supports that elections are already extremely secure as election officials of both parties in all 50 states have pronounced the 2020 election the most secure in US history. At least 62 courts have said there was no significant voter fraud.
He goes on to call the opponents of the bill liars. He states their claims of the law changes causing voter suppression are refuted by record voter turnout in the 2018 and 2020 election after previous election law changes. His over-simplified logic is missing several factors that impact voter turnout. One, the most recent elections have included some very controversial candidates. Two, several recent races have been decided by extremely narrow margins. Three, record amounts of money were spent to get out the vote.
Senator Klimesh states these lies and accusations of voter suppression are Democrat-based. I would suggest if he is looking for affirmation that the legislative changes are designed to suppress votes he is looking to the wrong party. On Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, Lindsey Graham stated, “If we don’t do something about voting by mail, we are going to lose the ability to elect a Republican in this country.” On Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, Senator Graham stated, “If Republicans don’t challenge and change the US election system, there will never be another Republican president elected again.” Predictably, at least 17 2021 state legislatures controlled by Republicans have introduced similar election change initiatives.
