Let’s not diminish honest efforts

By Julie Fischer, Decorah

Dear Editor,

I object to your editorial, impugning the patriotism of those who do not recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Is it not your proper mission as journalist at the supervisor meetings to report objectively on discussions and decisions of the board?

Citizens who attend County Supervisor meetings do so because they are interested in local government issues and want to better understand what our supervisors do. Their presence is proof of their patriotic intentions.

Citizen patriotism involves a commitment to staying informed, to taking an active interest in community welfare, to serving in public office, to volunteering help where needed, to speaking out against injustice, to paying one’s fair share of taxes, and to scrutinizing the best use of our public resources.

Let’s not attempt to diminish the honest efforts of our elected officials and other citizens by putting them under “oath surveillance.”
