Larger cities have much to learn from Decorah; thank you Decorah Rental

Dear Editor,
Our family has just returned home to Tulsa, Okla. from having spent eight days at Pulpit Rock campground. Part of our vacation plans included renting a car. So, upon arriving in town, I drove our RV to Decorah Rental. When picking up the car, I was impressed with their friendliness. Furthermore, I had a nice visit with Kathy (the owner of Decorah Rental) when I returned the car.
We left town and it wasn’t until we were approaching Mason City that my wife realized she left her purse in the rental car. However, it was 11 and they were to close at 12. My wife talked to Kathy and she said that she was so sorry and that she understood how disconcerting this is. She promised my wife that she would mail her purse on Monday morning and would contact us with the details. Granted, while Kathy’s generosity to literally go the extra mile was comforting, we were still a little nervous. To exacerbate the situation, after telling our friends what happened, their response was “you believe that she will mail your purse? You are naive to believe that a total stranger will do the right thing!”
However, they didn’t realize the people of Decorah and Kathy in particular place a premium not only on their word, but on helping others. Unfortunately, these twin values are missing in our larger cities like Tulsa. It is now Tuesday morning and true to Kathy’s word, she has mailed my wife’s purse, called us, and wants us to call her when it arrives. Kathy’s kindness shown to my family helps restore my belief that people are kind and do good. I will forever remember Kathy’s generosity. Next year, I will definitely be renting a car from Decorah Rental.
