Johnson will be missed but not forgotten

By Kent Nelson, Decorah

Dear Editor,
During COVID-19 isolation I have been re-reading some favorite books in my library, and I happened to come across an essay that Paul Johnson had written in a booklet “IOWA-Portait of the Land.” It was so well written and reflected his concern and love for his farm, his forest and all of the delicate soil that supports Iowa’s farmers, ranchers, foresters and wildlife. I called Paul and we talked about the essay and those things closest to his heart, family, farm and his woods. Paul recommended that I read his foreword in “The Geography of Hope,” a USDA publication, at an institution where he served as chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Services. His words were powerful and reflect the urgent call to protect our land and our environment. Paul was a gentle warrior and he fought hard to protect and improve the thin layer of earth that sustains us and all living things that grow in and on the land. In his memory we must carry on. He will be missed but not forgotten.
