In tribute to ordinary

By R.S. Hanson, Decorah

When my weary wife and I moved to Decorah to begin my career as a teacher at Luther College we chose to make First Lutheran the original “college church” our church so home only because of proximity. Over the years it proved to be a good choice, especially when its imposing tower became the location of an impressive pipe organ that is still skillfully put to accord by a very capable organist. But as time went on and take its toll the old building had to be put on life support with a series of pillars and cables. (When it was built in 1885 its wood frame with beautiful stained glass windows was sheathed with local brick that was not highly fired.) But the congregation shifted its efforts to housing the free food pantry that has had to move to a larger facility where many contributors now add to its store of free food for the needy. At the same time it housed the free clinic that is now coming back to life after COVID restrictions. And now a perceptive “call committee” chose a senior pastor who nurtures a worship experience that assigns para-pastoral roles to a batch of volunteers who serve with infectious enthusiasm. For my part I serve a parish (as it be) as chaplain at reasonably venerable Aase Haugen Home — a good job for an old-timer in the company of other elders and a sacrificial staff that carries on despite COVID restrictions.
