‘If Sen. Grassley has a backbone, I don’t see it’

By Matthew Nahan, Decorah

Sen. Grassley sent out a fine letter to constituents that rightly called-out the threat to Europe that Russia’s President Putin represents. In that context, he rightly called for American support of Ukraine. But then he supports anything and everything that Trump pukes onto the world stage. This includes Trump’s embrace of Russia, his taking a wrecking-ball to our alliance with Europe and attempting to force Ukraine’s surrender. This is what Grassley has facilitated. What is next? Will Trump formally align the USA with Russia? Is there any line that Grassley would not cross for his almighty party leader?

If Grassley had a legislative baby, it would be the Inspector General Act of 1978. From his perch on the Senate Judiciary Committee, he has helped to define it and its more recent modifications. In November of 2024, he and Sen. Ernst co-founded the bipartisan Inspector General Caucus to further support the act. So when Trump broke the act by not providing a 30 day notice of his intent and rationale to fire all Inspector Generals, without cause, what does Sen. Grassley do about it? He approves all of Trump’s cabinet nominees. Even those with expressed admiration for Putin, opposition to Ukraine and disdain for Europe.

If Sen. Grassley has a backbone, I don’t see it. It looks like party over country and principles to me. Congress needs to censure Trump for his embrace of Putin and his break with Europe and Ukraine. If Congress and our courts do not put a check upon Trump, our Democracy will have turned fascist.
