The Bible makes the generally accepted claim that, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord.” Psalm 92:1 But how good is it?
Well, it is so good that giving thanks significantly improves your emotional well-being!
Participants who completed a four-week gratitude contemplation program reported greater life satisfaction and self-esteem than the control group participants did (Rash, Matsuba, & Prkachin, 2011).
Simply journaling for five minutes a day about what you are thankful for has been shown to enhance your long-term happiness by a magnitude of 10%. (Emmons & McCullough, 2003; Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005).
But what about when you’re already not feeling so hot? Well, a study on the effects of gratitude on depression, coping, and suicide showed that gratitude is a protective factor when it comes to suicidal behavior in stressed and depressed individuals (Krysinska, Lester, Lyke, & Corveleyn, 2015). So an attitude of gratitude can help protect us when we are at our weakest.
Being thankful is also so good that it actually improves your physical health as well!
A study on thankfulness showed that participants experienced a 35% reduction in depressive symptoms for several weeks, and that these benefits continued as long as they journaled about what they were thankful for. (Seligman et al., 2005). This is truly amazing if you think about it. It suggests that gratitude journaling can be an effective supplement to treatment for depression!
Another study revealed that patients with hypertension who “count their blessings” at least once a week experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure, resulting in better overall health! (Shipon, 1977)
These findings support the Bible’s claim that a positive attitude brings “health to the bones” (Prov. 16:24), and can save you on your doctor bill as well!
Lastly, giving thanks is so good that you can actually experience God by doing so.
Thanksgiving is directly tied to prayer which Jesus directly links to the quality of our relationship with God.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Phil. 4:6
“In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” Jesus (John 16:26-27)
Could there be any greater benefit to being thankful than to have a closer walk with God? Jesus ties gratitude with salvation in that verse. Anyone who grasps the magnitude of their forgiveness of sins through the sacrificial death of Christ, and asks Jesus for the gift of eternal life will most definitely have something to be thankful for.
“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.” I Thess. 2:13
So thanksgiving is so much more than a day off to eat massive amounts of turkey and to buy things we don’t need. It’s a day to practice the lost art of gratitude and bring healing to your mind, body and soul.
