Getting to the table

By Ketel Paulsen, Decorah

Dear Editor,

I believe more information is nearly always better and, in order to make an informed decision on whether or not to to establish an MEU for Decorah, we would first just have to be at that table.

I want Decorah citizens to be able to give themselves the freedom of knowing all the elements we can about the costs and procedures of purchasing our own energy. I do not understand why our community would not want to take this opportunity to find as much as we can in order to know if owning our own power is the best way to go.

Ideally I want Decorah to have the ability to choose how much solar power we can install — also wind — and currently we just don’t have that ability to make those important climate-worthy decisions on our own. I would like all of Decorah’s energy to come from renewable energy, and this could be one nice step to claiming that freedom.

I am impressed that other communities all across Iowa have put themselves in good positions of knowing their costs and forming organizations of their own and realizing sometimes 60 percent cheaper energy costs. Seeing Neal’s numbers for what other cities and towns pay, heck I want to pay that amount now instead.

Let’s vote to be at that table,
