From hopeful future resident

Dear Editor:
After receiving the paper, the Bluffside Gardens article quickly caught my attention. I was excited and eager to know whether this was going to be a new living community for residents/future residents of Decorah. I was disappointed to find out that this is yet another lodging option – one that is direct neighbors with Country Inn and Suites. The idea of trails, extensive gardens and courtyards is wonderful – however I think this vision is taking a wrong turn.
Decorah is very lucky to have numerous campsites, cabins, short term rentals and several hotels, such as Super 8, Hotel Winneshiek and Fairfield by Marriott. Why do we need more lodging? If Bluffside Gardens is going to be offering temporary lodging ranging from single person studios to three-bedroom units (right by a hotel), why can’t these buildings be small homes for residents? What about the students fresh out of college who can’t afford to buy a house? The elderly couple who wants to downsize? The single mom with young kids who is looking for a place to live that is affordable or available for rent?
Decorah’s rental options are limited, and with the housing market, buying is not always an option. However, I would be the first to sign up if I were to see one of these cabins as a place to rent and live. Don’t we want more people staying rather than just passing through? Bluffside Gardens should be a place people can call home. People who rent come and go when the timing is right for them. Let this be a steppingstone for those who need a place to start, and a place to land for those who are ready to slow down and settle into something smaller.
