Finding a fair balance on the opinion page

By JoAn Nelson, Decorah

Letter to the editor:

The new Decorah newspaper is a great change! A much needed breath of fresh air in our community. It has meat. It has interesting articles and information. Thank you.

Decorah is a liberal town. Winneshiek County is conservative. I’m sure you try to maintain a balance between the two to appease all your readers and keep everyone happy and reading your newspaper.

Case in point: when you covered the Winn Dems event at Whalen Cabin recently, you completely left out Sarah Corkery. You then explained why you did that. You also used the excuse that Sarah showed up at the last minute. I think it would have been better and fairer if you had mentioned she was there. You were there and you could have mentioned that she was there. One sentence.

Regarding your comments on the supervisors’ behavior. You weren’t even there. They treat the public very rudely. It’s an ongoing problem. Most of the letter writers to the newspaper are carefully constructed and to the point. The majority are highly educated, experienced and informed. Please stop scolding them and lecturing them.

Can you please post a copy of the newspaper’s letter to the editor policy regarding submission of opinion pieces?

Best regards,
