Decorah needs to do better when getting a reading consultant

By Jana Evelsizer Olson, Decorah

Dear Editor:
Rick Varney, John Cline Principal, called in response to an email I sent asking for additional information regarding other proposals and reading consultants considered. Varney said Decorah is implementing a new curriculum in the elementary schools called “Into Reading.”  It is a balanced literacy program.  The new consultant will work with teachers using guided reading and this balanced reading program lessons, and they felt she had the most experience. No specifics on any other proposals and no dyslexia credentials were provided for the new reading consultant.
Why does it matter if the reading consultant has any dyslexia credentials or training? One in five people are dyslexic, and 80 percent of reading struggles are attributed to dyslexia. Balanced literacy programs aren’t effective for dyslexic/struggling readers. Reading consultants need to address dyslexia, and provide effective, structured, and explicit reading instruction. Structured literacy programs are systematic and help all readers, not just dyslexic readers.  As children get to 3rd, 4th and 5th grades dyslexia looks like anxiety, depression, restlessness, acting out etc., a child that doesn’t get proper instruction and struggles doesn’t want to go to school, feels stupid and has low self-esteem. I have a child with dyslexia; the struggle is real.
Decorah has kept Fundations, which will help with some of the deficits of the balanced literacy program. I would encourage Decorah to look to the Ottumwa School District which has implemented a dyslexia friendly program consistent from K-12 grade; reading doesn’t stop in 4th grade. It is a structured literacy program called “Wilson” getting strong results.
Decorah can do better.  $63,300 on a reading consultant for one year with a balanced literacy program is not a good use of resources, considering future budget issues. Disappointed.
