DCSD Red and Blue could turn into Red versus Blue

By Tim Lecander, Decorah

We recently went through a lively off year election. What used to be a largely ignored election turned into one filled with yard signs, lively discussions, and letters to the editor. Turnout almost doubled! That alone is not a bad thing, but when Club 45 started displaying some of those lawn signs in its window, that started me to compare the names on the ballots with local businesses. Sadly, this has caused me to look at our vibrant local business community through a red and blue lens.
In his Letter to the Editor on Oct. 27., our friend Mr. Hansen, in response to having been called out on this, stated “SO WHAT!” Mr. Hansen is leading us down a path of division in our community. We are all proud of the way we help each build a vibrant community, one that buys and sells to each other, and one that keeps our dollars in our local stores.
I am not against having discussions of important issues of the day that impact our children and our community. But what I don’t appreciate is hearing this from a megaphone with the constant drum beat of culture wars and dog whistles.
